Blog post #1-Independant Reading-Book selection

May 18th, 2008 by chris4

I chose To Kill a Mockingbird, mainly because I had already read it, if you want to know the truth. I have to read enough for school that I don’t normally read for fun too. In this novel by Harper Lee, told from the point of view of Scout, a six year old girl in the 1930’s Alabama,  Scout Finch and her brother, Jem. The summer when Scout was six and Jem was ten, they met Dill, a little boy who spent the summer with his aunt who lived next door to the Finches. Dill and Jem become obsessed with Boo Radley and start to play games about him and make him come out of his house through out the summer. Then a man named Tom Robinson gets convicted of rape by Mayella Ewell (young white woman) and Atticus agrees to defend Tom to the best of his ability.  Atticus proves that the accusers Mayella and Bob Ewell(her father, and the town drunk) are lying! It also becomes clear that  Mayella was making sexual advances towards Tom and that her father caught her in the act. Even know Tom is proven innocence, he is convicted! The finches can not believe this. When it seems hopeless, Tom trys to escape from prison to get back home to his wife and child but is shot while trying. Bob Ewell is humiliated by the trial and vows revenge. He spits in Atticus’ face on the street, tries to break into the judge’s house, and menaces Tom Robinson’s widow. Finally, he attacks the Jem and Scout as they walk home from a halloween play at their school. Jem’s arm is broken in the struggle, and some mysterious man comes to their rescue. The mysterious man carries Jem home, where Scout eventually recognizes him as the reclusive Boo Radley.Maycomb’s sheriff arrives and discovers that Bob Ewell has been killed. sheriff’s story that Ewell simply fell on his own knife. Boo asks Scout to walk him home, and after she says goodbye to him at his front door, he disappears again.

Blog post #5 - FIRE!!!

April 30th, 2008 by chris4

One time, when I was about five years old, I was in my backyard. Playing on a hot summer day. I saw my mom outside smoking and on the table I saw her lighter. I thought of all the fun things I could light on fire. Pretended to play while keeping a keen eye on my mom, waiting for to go back inside. Once she went inside, I walked over and grabbed the lighter, thinking of how I could light something on fire and how much fun it would be. I ran to the front corner of my house, opposite of the front door and windows. I saw a bunch of cardboard boxes nest to the garbage can and decided that they might be fun to burn. So, I leaned over, and thought to myself, “I could make a small fire” I put the lighter up to the cardboard and lit on fire! I watched as the flame grew and grew until it was a small fire. I could feel the heat coming from the small fire, but for some reason, I didn’t think it was a big deal. That is, until the garbage can, right next to the cardboard, started to catch! All of a sudden, my garbage can was on fire and the fire started to rise rapidly. I could smell the chemical smell of the thick plastic burning. So, instead of telling my parents that there was a ragging fire in the trash can and about to catch the house on fire too, I decided to run into the kitchen and fill up a glass of water and run back to the fire and try to put it out. When this didn’t work, I decided to do the responsible thing and get two glasses of water and try to put out the fire. I panicked as I poured the water in a feeble attempt to extinguish the flames. It was like trying to put out a volcano with a thimble full of water! As I was pouring the water on what was now a five-foot tall fire, a jogger was running by spotted the fire. He ran over and told my parents, they got the fire extinguisher and put out the fire. Their faces looked pale and relieved at the same time, as we talk about the danger of fire. Then they turned and looked at me and said that I was only grounded for a couple of days. Since I was so young, that was all the punishment I got. The garbage can is still melted to this day, and I still play like to light things on fire.
